ESS Substitute Bus Attendant
An ESS substitute bus aide plays an integral role in assisting the school bus driver in providing a safe, orderly, and efficient transportation service for students. They support the needs of students during routine activities and emergency situations. The bus aide effectively supervises and manages the behavior of students and often provide support for an individual student or group of students with special needs and/or disabilities.
Substitute bus aides are also known as bus monitors and transportation assistants.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance.
- Assesses potential emergency situations on the bus and within loading and unloading zones for the purpose of taking appropriate action to protect the well-being of passengers
- Assists students for the purpose of providing for special needs during transport, safe loading and unloading from buses including both emergency situations and normal transport.
- Attends meetings (e.g. training, D.O.E. mandate, first aid and CPR, in service, etc.) for the purpose of receiving and/or conveying information to perform job functions.
- Instructs students for the purpose of enforcing rules/regulations and maintaining safety.
- Monitors students with special needs until released to teacher, instructional assistant, parent, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the students safety.
- Monitors students (e.g. unruly, disruptive, abusive language, etc.) for the purpose of preventing distraction to the driver or injury to themselves or other students/passengers.
- Prepares documentation (e.g. incident reports, inspections, student count, passenger misconduct, mileage, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.
- Reports observations and/or incidents (e.g. discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate personnel.

- Secures students and/or equipment with restraints, tie downs (e.g. wheelchairs, seat belts, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safety and well-being of students.
- Performs other duties as assigned by appropriate administrator.
Qualifications
- Minimum of a high school diploma or GED
- Job related experience desired
- Routine physical activities that are required to fulfill job responsibilities; lifting, bending, standing, ability to lift and move equipment and/or student weighing 40 pounds
- Good Written and oral communication Skills
