OVERVIEW: Paraprofessional educators work under the direction of the classroom teacher to provide extra support to students with special needs, promoting maximum academic and personal growth. They are also known as school aides, teacher assistants, instructional aides, one-to-one aides, and more.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide instructional reinforcement for individual students or small groups of students.
  • Assist teach with classroom management and general supervision of the class.
  • Assist with administrative duties such as setting up equipment and preparing materials.
  • Supervise students in the cafeteria, schoolyard, specials, hallways, on field trips, and/or during before and after school programs.
  • Attend to students’ physical, personal, academic, and emotional needs.
  • Support students with special needs by following provisions specified in their IEPs/504 Plans.
  • Other duties as assigned or as become evident.

 

COMPETENCIES

Language, Math and Reasoning  

Language Skills

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in on and one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.

Math Skills

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Abilities

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but involved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, and TRAINING:

  • Minimum of a HS diploma or GED equivalent.
