Substitute Paraeducator


DEFINITION

Under the supervision of the school principal or designee, assists with the supervision and instruction of students; performs clerical tasks; and assists students on and off campus by meeting special health care needs and developing students’ daily living and behavioral skills.


EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Works with students in groups or individually to assist with specific instructional tasks. Implements, under the supervision of certificated staff, instructional programs in accordance with lesson plans to assist certificated staff in improving students’ academic success through a defined course of study. Adapts classroom work under the direction of to support and/or reinforce lesson plans. Collects information for certificated staff and/or other appropriate personnel. Advises students regarding personal hygiene when necessary for the purpose of promoting good personal hygiene among students. Cleans work areas to maintain a sanitary environment. Assists in training newly hired paraprofessionals for purposes of providing consistent and uninterrupted services to students. Oversees activities of students in the classroom and other areas. Performs routine clerical duties such as scheduling meetings, preparing classroom and instructional materials, as well as gathering and organizing school records. Attends and participates in meetings as assigned for the purposes of receiving training and conveying and/or gathering information, and collaborating with colleagues. Shares relevant information about students with certificated staff to facilitate problem solving and to improve student academic progress. Performs other related duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE of basic instructional methods and classroom management techniques; subjects including arithmetic, reading, writing, grammar and spelling; educationally related hardware and software tools. Ability to assist with instruction and related activities; tutor individual and small groups of students; use appropriate student behavior management strategies; perform clerical duties; operate standard office machines and equipment; record information completely and accurately; maintain confidentiality about students and their families; and establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with students, teachers, administrators, parents, and others.

EDUCATION

High school diploma


REQUIREMENTS

Completion of at least two years of study at an institution of higher education; or possession of an AA degree or higher; or verification of having obtained a passing score on a district-approved proficiency assessment demonstrating knowledge of, and ability to assist in, instructing reading, writing and mathematics.

Clearances: All clearances required to provide service in a public school district in the State of California

DESCRIPTION OF PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Medical Category I

Positions in this category require moderate physical strength and endurance for standing, sitting, bending, or walking. Work assignments are normally located in a work environment with light physical work and requires light physical effort. Lifting 25 lbs. maximum or carrying any

object weighing over 15 lbs. Performs the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; some reaching.
