Substitute Campus Monitor


DEFINITION

Under the supervision of the school principal or designee, monitor campus activities to assure the safety of students, staff, and visitors; ensure student compliance with school and district policies; minimize the frequency and/or severity of harmful incidents; communicate with school administrators regarding security issues and incidents; and routine inspection and monitoring of facility, grounds, and restrooms. The Campus Monitor is a student support position, integral to helping establish and maintain a positive, respectful, and safe learning environment for all students.


EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

  • Provide school policy information to students, staff, and visitors, including information regarding enforcement processes and consequences. Enforce school and district rules, regulations, and policies for the safety and security of students, staff, and property.
  • Monitor students within a variety of school environments (e.g. restrooms, hallways, library, cafeteria, etc.) to ensure the safety and welfare of students.
  • Verify the reason students are out of class during class time and intervene as needed with the goal of returning students to class quickly. Authorize students and visitors who are entering or leaving campus during school hours.
  • Prepare documentation (e.g. incident and activity reports, security logs, etc.) and maintain various
  • records related to assigned activities.
  • Intervene to de-escalate potential conflicts to minimize disruptions of campus activities and/or injury to involved parties.
  • Refer incidents to appropriate site personnel (e.g. injuries, altercations, suspicious activities, etc.) for follow-up in accordance with administrative guidelines.
  • Address problematic behavior in a calm and non-confrontational manner using a continuum of responses starting with the least severe intervention to achieve the desired correction.
  • Strategically diffuse anger and aggression of students in crisis; disengage when the situation is unsafe, and seek support of appropriate school personnel as necessary.
  • Report observations and incidents relating to students (e.g. accidents, fights, inappropriate social behavior, violations of rules, etc.) to communicate information to appropriate school personnel for follow-up action.
  • Respond to emergency situations to address immediate safety concerns.
  • Routinely inspect and report campus conditions and restroom status throughout the day, retrieving and disposing of trash from grounds, restroom floors and sinks; checking and restocking restroom supplies (paper products, soap, etc.); and reporting to the day custodian, in a timely manner, all other cleaning and maintenance services that are needed, including stopped-up plumbing, vandalism, graffiti, etc.
  • Assist other personnel as may be required in seeking, identifying and/or confiscating items placed on school property or in the possession of individuals in violation of law or policy to maintain a safe school environment.


QUALIFICATIONS

Skills are required to communicate school policies and enforcement procedures to students, personnel and visitors in ways that promote cooperation; some need to upgrade skills due to changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include techniques for observing behaviors and anticipating or predicting potentially harmful actions; methods for managing non-compliance, defusing, and de-escalating conflicts; resolving minor disputes and participating in conflict mediation. Sound judgment and decision-making skills are required.

Knowledge is required to implement procedures, enforce rules, laws and policies, and prepare documentation. Specific knowledge is required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job, including assessing potentially harmful situations.

Ability is required to work with a diversity of individuals. Problem-solving is required to analyze issues, create plans of action, and reach solutions. Ability to identify unsafe behavior and situations; identify drug and alcohol use and/or impairment; act quickly with reasonable judgment; analyze situations and apply inductive and deductive reasoning; understand, carry out, and give verbal and written directions;

and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.


DESCRIPTION OF PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Medical Category II

  1. Positions in this category require moderate physical exertion associated with the ability to lift, carry, push, pull, or climb.
  2. Physical capability for sustained physical work; requires strength and endurance associated with moderate physical effort while performing job duties, including significant walking, in various environments and weather conditions.
  3. Lift 50 Lbs. maximum or carry any object weighing up to 25 lbs.

Performs the following physical demands: significant walking (up to 60% of the shift); standing (up to 35% of shift), lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; stooping; kneeling, crouching, and reaching. Occasional contact with dissatisfied or hostile individuals.
