Substitute Certified School Nurse


An ESS substitute school nurse (RN) assists in providing the fullest possible educational opportunity for students by minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being in the schools. 


DUTIES:


Essential Elements:

1.    Implements all school health services as required by law and/or as defined by the school health services plan (e.g., hearing, vision, weight and scoliosis screenings, physicals, etc.).

2.    Maintains a comprehensive health record system as required by law and the school health services plan.

3.    Assesses the health status of students, plans appropriate interventions and evaluates the care provided. Nursing interventions include case finding, direct care, health counseling, health education, referral and follow up.

4.    Contributes to the education of the student with special health needs by assessing the student, planning and providing appropriate nursing care and evaluating the care.

5.    Collaborates with other school professionals, families and caregivers to meet the health, developmental and educational needs of students.

6.    Collaborates with members of the community in the delivery of health and social services and utilizes knowledge of community health systems and resources to function as a school-community liaison.

7.    Assists in evaluating and revising the school health services program to determine program effectiveness.

8.    Provides training and ongoing supervision for designated personnel regarding delegated care (LPN’s, RN’s, Access aides, building secretaries, other CASD staff).

9.    Maintains confidentiality of the health room setting. All activities and conversations are considered confidential.

10. Maintains a positive communication link with parents, staff and community agencies.

11. Other duties as assigned.

 

 

Other Elements: (List)

1.    Provides on-site and on-call coverage to single/multiple schools with LPN’s, RN’s and health room aides.

2.    Provides coverage for emergencies, accidents, etc. anywhere in the district.

3.    Assists with mass screenings, physicals, kindergarten registration and evening assignments.

4.    Attends and participates in IST/SAP meetings.

Qualifications:


• Meets minimum requirements as established by the PA Department of Education: Registered Nurse, Bachelor’s Degree, Educational specialist I Certificate which is converted to an Educational Specialist II Certificate.

• Maintains current certification in CPR.

• Possesses effective written, verbal and nonverbal communication skills.

• Ability to implement and coordinate the many health services and programs related to school health services.

• Ability to organize and manage large volumes of records.
